Routes

Assigned as a University project, I was tasked to design a fully functioning app prototype on Adobe XD. The app could be based on any topic I wanted, as long as it was interactive and worked effectively for users, so I decided to design a travel app named Routes.

Routes is your digital tourist guide when travelling, helping users easily plan worldwide road trips. It has many abilities, the main one being able to locate and finalise routes around the world, but it can also recommend details along the way such as: places to eat, accommodations to stay at for different nights and tourist attractions to visit - even suitable vehicles to hire for the long journey!

Crossing eight states and three time zones, Route 66 starts at Chicago in Illinois and finishes at Santa Monica in California, measuring at 2,448 miles long! It passes ever-changing landscapes, from red deserts and vast croplands, to ghost towns and bustling cities, guiding you through North America from East to West. I chose to base my app prototype on Route 66 because it is something that has always been near the top of my Bucket List! It would be a dream to drive Route 66 one day, so I thought about what would make my trip easier if I ever had the chance to drive it and placed all my ideas into the design of the app, such as: maps, food/drink, accommodations, entertainment, vehicles, music, etc.

If I were to expand this University project, as more of a self-assigned challenge, then I would explore more ‘iconic’ road routes around the world to create some sections on. The Pan American Highway is famous for being the longest road in the world, measuring at 19,000 miles long; the North Coast 500 is famous for being Scotland’s own Route 66, passing through stunning coastal scenery, rugged mountains, historical landmarks and remote fishing villages; other routes like the Hana Highway in Hawaii, the Cabot Trail in Canada and the Trollstigen Mountain Road in Norway are also all worth mentioning. I’d love to drive all these roads one day, especially with an app like Routes with me to expedite the planning.
