Curlz for Dayz
Curly hair is something that I have been both blessed and cursed with! There have never been any haircare products made exclusively for curly hair that actually work effectively, so I challenged myself to a day’s project to boost my creativity by designing a fictional brand.
‘Curlz for Dayz’ produces haircare products which help tame and style all types of curly hair, from loose waves to wild afros! It also produces products such as silk sleep turbans and microfibre towels which help maintain hair health. I designed this brand through the eyes of a consumer - constantly considering if I would purchase products from this brand, if it were a real brand, to try on my hair.
I had yet to work with a nude colour palette and thought that this small project would be the perfect opportunity, since it represents caring for all types of curly hair originating from different ethnic backgrounds. It isn’t a loud palette like many of my other projects either - it is not bright or flashy, so it doesn’t relish the spotlight. Instead, it’s incredibly relaxing and doesn’t demand attention, effortlessly captivating audiences with its delicate allure and calming hues. Therefore, all the focus is directed towards the brand’s haircare products.
The bottled products were the most challenging to design, as I wanted to visually convey how to determine your specific hair type, so I created a minimalistic chart that ranged from 2A (loose waves) to 4C (wild afros) - the number represents the curl type and the letter represents how tight those curls are. Anybody with a hair type of 1A, 1B or 1C would not benefit from these products, since their strands are classed as straight! As previously mentioned, I designed this brand through the eyes of a consumer, so I know that it would be much easier if haircare products were sectioned into specific curl types, rather than just generally stating that they ‘work well on curly hair’, as all curly hair is different and unique.
